Fire Safety And Fire Cleanup

Portable fire extinguishers can be life and property saving tools when used correctly. In order to operate an extinguisher, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggest remembering the word PASS: 

Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism. 

Aim low. Point the extinguisher as the base of the fire. 

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. 

Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Read the instructions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out. It is also important to ensure you have the correct type of extinguisher for your home or facility. Summer is synonymous with barbeques, parades and fireworks displays; but along with all the the festivities are plenty of visits to emergency rooms-especially during July.

Each year, around 230 people are injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition to causing injury, fireworks are also responsible for thousands of house fires each year with millions of dollars in property damage. 

• Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear. 
• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire. 
• Children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over as they may still be active.
• The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professional.
• Have a Happy Fourth of July.

Firework Facts:

• Fireworks cause an average of almost 20,000 reported fires per year.
• In 2013, sparklers caused 41% of fireworks injuries.
• On Independence Day in a typical year, fireworks account for two out of five reported fires, more than any other cause of fire.

1. Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use
2. Make sure people especially young children and pets stay away from the grill

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don't practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous. 

Here are some safety tips to ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

Never leave cooking food unattended.

Check food  regularly, use a timer as a reminder.

Keep young kids away from the cooking area. 

Keep anything flamable away from the stove, oven or any other hot surface. 

Do not wear loose clothing while cooking.

Clean cooking surfaces to prevent grease buildup.

Purchase a fire extinguisher and learn how to use it properly.

Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving home, to make sure all appiances are turned off. 

Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen, on each level of the home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year.

Turn on the Green Light to Honor Veterans

Waldwick - Every Nov. 11, the nation takes a day to honor all those who have served in the armed forces.

This year, in addition to a procession at 10:45 a.m. in front of American Legion Post 57 and a ceremony at Veterans Plaza at 11 a.m., Mayor Thomas Giordano is urging residents to take part in an initiative that would make it more obvious just how much the borough supports its veterans.

"To show our thanks to our veterans in all they have done for all of us, I ask all Waldwick residents to change a single light bulb in the front of your home to green to show support for those who have served," Giordano said in a statement.

Giordano's call is part of the nationwide initiative called Greenlight A Vet. The website describes the initiative as a "campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green" with the color green signifying "hope, renewal and well-being" as well as offering a "greenlight" forward for veterans who are back home.

American Legion Post 57 Commander John Vervoort said he appreciated the initiative and Giordano's support of veterans.

"[In] our post, we've got men from the 'Greatest Generation' that served in the Pacific and European theaters and all war eras, up until now," said Vervoort. "I know, to me, I'm going to be very interested to see how many green lights are out there. It's going to touch my heart to see it."

For Giordano, along with recognition, the green lights will serve as a quiet "thank you" to all veterans.

"As Veterans Day approaches, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all our Waldwick veterans and all veterans for your sacrifices and selflessness as you make our country a better place," said Giordano. "Your dedicated service to our country will never be forgotten. You are examples of how courage and leadership leads to service. And we owe all of you a debt of gratitude."
